Botox For The Jawline: Explore The Risks And Downtime

Botox is a well-known cosmetic procedure for reducing fine lines, facial contouring, and more. It seems to be a magical cure-all for all of one’s aesthetic desires (but of course, it has its risks and limitations as well) – including jawline reduction and slimming.

Ladies with angular or round jawlines often wish they could reduce its appearance because V-shaped jawlines are perceived to be more feminine and elegant. Botox is one cosmetic procedure that can be used to achieve this. The procedure targets the masseter muscles near the cheeks, below the ear. By relaxing those muscles, the treatment results in a slimmer jawline appearance.

What causes square jawline?

In the first place, what causes the appearance of square jawlines? The square-ness can be attributed to either an inherited bone structure or the presence of pronounced masseter muscles. While the bone structure of the face cannot be ‘fixed’ using Botox, masseter muscles can be reduced using Botox.

The masseter muscles are the muscles used for chewing, and they naturally grow with age. Like any muscle in the body, it appears larger the more it is used. Thus, habits like teeth grinding and nail-biting can contribute to more pronounced masseter muscles.

How safe are Botox injections for the jawline?

As opposed to surgical methods for facial contouring, Botox injections are a minimally invasive procedure that delivers natural-looking jawline slimming effects. Generally, Botox is safe when administered by a trained and experienced practitioner. Under the hands of an expert, the exact zones can be targeted, assuring that patient’s chewing and smiling abilities will not be affected when the masseter muscles are reduced.

Some side effects of Botox are numbness, swelling, and bruising. These may feel uncomfortable for a while, but these minor side effects typically fade away within 1-2 weeks. Complications arising from Botox are rare, and there are also patients who have no visible results after receiving Botox. However, these cases are in the minority – most patients experience no further problems, and enjoy the appearance of a slimmer jawline starting from a few days after the treatment.

What is the downtime for Botox?

Botox is administered through injections on an outpatient basis – this means that there is no hospital stay involved, and you can resume most normal activities immediately after receiving the treatment.

The only things you need to take note are the steps to care for the treated area. Doctors usually advise patients not to lie down or rub their face for at least 4 hours after the injections. For at least 24 hours after the procedure, you should not be doing any strenuous physical activities.

In 4-7 days, Botox will start to take effect. Reduction in size of your jaw muscles happens over the next 2-4 weeks. I routinely review my patients 1 month after their jaw botox treatment to see if they need additional Botox injections. These effects usually last for 4-6 months – thus regular Botox sessions are usually recommended if you want to maintain the youthful effects on your jawline.

In Singapore, jawline reduction Botox is widely available at medical aesthetic clinics. Make sure to always choose to receive cosmetic treatments from trained professionals who are experienced in the procedure you are receiving.
