Regenera Activa vs FUE Hair Transplant: Which is Better for Hair Loss? (2019)

Natural, Scar-free Hair Loss Treatment

Reading Time: 5 minutes

“Doc, I’m LOSING HAIR. Hair growth medicines have side-effects. Hair transplant surgery is risky and has downtime. What other hair growth treatments are there?”

You might want to consider Regenera Activa – an autologous micro-graft treatment.

Regenera Activa at Sozo Aesthetic Clinic in Singapore

Although recently introduced in Singapore this year, Regenera Activa is a well-established hair loss treatment that is approved by major health regulatory authorities internationally – FDA (US), CE (Europe) and HSA (Singapore).

As one of the pioneer users of Regenera Activa in Singapore, I see satisfying results of this natural and scar-free hair loss treatment that bridges the gap between hair loss medicine and hair transplant surgery.

What exactly is Regenera Activa?

Using “micro-grafts” harvested from your own healthy hair, Regenera Active is an all-natural hair growth treatment with minimal side-effects (unlike medications) and no social downtime (unlike surgery).

How does Regenera Activa work?

Regenera Activa is a 3 step procedure that takes 1 hour in total:

1. Harvest of micro-grafts

Healthy scalp at the back of the head contains the ideal micro-grafts
Meticulous extraction of healthy micro-grafts

2. Extraction of Regenerative cells from micro-grafts using Regenera Activa

Patented Regenera Activa technology in Sozo Aesthetic Clinic
Putting the micro-grafts into the Regenera Activa device

3. Injection of regenerative cells to hair loss areas.

Who is suitable for Regenera Activa?

Both men and women with hair thinning, early hair loss and decrease in hair volume due to Androgenetic Alopecia/ Pattern Hair Loss are suitable.

But first, what is androgenetic alopecia?

Androgenetic alopecia also known as pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women.

For Men

In men, this condition is also known as male pattern hair loss.

Hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes to form a characteristic “M” shape.

Hair also thins at the crown (near the top of the head), often progressing to partial or complete baldness.

Based on the Hamilton Scale, male patients with Grade I to III hair loss are suitable for the treatment. This is because the Regenera method is based on the recovery of still-alive, hypo-functioning hair follicles.

Unfortunately, Regenera Activa is unable to help with large areas of hair follicles that are non-functioning (Grade IV onwards). The recommendation is to undergo a hair transplant.

The pattern of hair loss in women differs from male-pattern baldness.

For Women

In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede.

Based on the Ludwig scale, female patients with Grade I (mild) hair loss are most suitable for the treatment. It is still possible to treat Grade II (moderate) hair loss.

Who is not suitable for Regenera Activa?

People with scarring alopecia are not suitable for this treatment.

Those with telogen effluvium are also not suitable as it is a reversible condition that will improve over time.

Who will benefit the most from Regenera Activa?

Healthy men and women with mild or early hair loss will benefit the most from Regenera Activa treatment.

Better result are generally seen in those with dark, curly and wavy hair as compared to straight hair.

You must be wondering…

Why Regenera Activa when there’s medicine and surgery for hair loss?

Regenera Activa compared to other hair loss treatments

Regenera Activa versus hair loss medicines (finasteride, minoxidil)

Minimal Side-Effects:

Medicines can have negative side-effects. For example, finasteride is associated with sexual dysfunction. Minoxidil hair sprays can cause scalp irritation.

Regenera Activa uses autologous micro-grafts which are cells extracted from your own scalp. Hence, there is no risk of allergy or tissue rejection.

Faster Action:

Finasteride and minoxidil can also take more than 6 months for effects whereas early results can be seen in 1 month for Regenera Activa.

Regenera Activa versus Hair Transplant Surgery (Follicular Unit Extraction/ Follicular Unit Transplant)

Minimal Social Downtime:

Hair transplant/ restoration surgery is one of the best permanent solutions for hair loss, especially for those with severe hair loss.

However, hair transplant surgery has social downtime of up to 1 week due to post-surgery recovery and variable success rates. Shaving of hair is generally necessary.

Regenera Activa has negligible social downtime as the micro-graft harvest sites and injection sites are well-concealed.

What’s the expected results of Regenera Activa?

Regenera Activa® acts almost immediately to activate dormant hair follicles.

Early visible results can be seen within 1 month.

Numerous clinical studies have shown improvements in hair density, hair counts and scalp coverage in as early as 14 days.

Reduction of hair loss is first witnessed (hair strands get thicker).

Next, there is improved thickness and density of existing hair and growth of new hair over the next 12 months.

Can Regenera Activa be combined with other hair loss treatments?

Regenera Activa can be combined with low-level laser light therapy (LLLT) such as the iGrow home device, hair growth supplements and anti-hair loss shampoos.

It is common for patients to reduce their dosage of DHT-blockers (finasteride) after their Regenera Activa treatment.

How much does Medical Hair Loss treatment cost in Singapore?

Finasteride cost in Singapore: $60-100/ month

Low-Level Laser Therapy cost in Singapore: $1000-1100

Autologous Micrograft Regenera Activa cost in Singapore: $3700-6000

Hair Transplant cost in Singapore: from $10,000. Based on average price at $5/graft for 2,000 grafts.

Is Regenera Activa cost-effective?

Compared to hair loss treatment packages at hair spas, which can cost $3000 to $8000/year, these medical treatments are more effective at treating hair loss and less expensive.

When should I seek treatment for hair loss?

The longer you wait before seeking treatment, the less likely you are to recover hair that has already been lost.

This is because hair follicles undergo miniaturization.

The hair follicle’s diameter shrinks and reduces to the point where new hair no longer grows.

When should I seek treatment using Regenera Activa?

Your number of hair follicles are finite – once your follicles are gone, it cannot grow back. Not even with Regenera Activa.

As Regenera Activa works best for mild to moderate hair loss, it is best to seek treatment early to get the best results.

How do I find the best doctor for Regenera Activa in Singapore?

1. Find a doctor who is specialises in Hair Loss

Hair loss might be hard to diagnose for doctors who do not see hair loss conditions on a daily basis.

The main advantage of consulting a doctor who specialises in hair loss is in-depth expertise in a wide range of hair loss solutions.

This is important because Regenera Activa or Hair Transplants are not the only treatments for hair loss in Singapore. Often times, a combination of synergistic hair loss treatments is necessary for good results.

2. Price is not everything – Results are.

Slowing down hair loss and maintaining a healthy hair line is a long term financial commitment. Don’t spend your hard-earned money on expensive non-medical treatments that may not work.

This being said, the cheapest option may not always be the best option too. Don’t be penny wise, pound foolish. Find a reasonably priced hair specialist so that you get results at a reasonable and sustainable price.

3. Customised Treatments are Key

Always seek customised treatments as the location and pattern of everyone’s hair loss is unique.

This is especially important for procedural hair loss treatments like Regenera Activa and Hair transplant surgery.

An expert hair doctor will customise injection sites so that you get the best results especially at regions of greatest hair loss.
